Trip Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate the fuel cost of a road trip from distance, fuel efficiency and fuel price.
Quick answer: Fuel cost = distance ÷ efficiency × fuel price. Efficiency is in km per litre.
Worked example
A 350 km trip in a car that does 14 km per litre needs 350 ÷ 14 = 25 litres. At 1.60 per litre, that costs 40.00.
How to use it
- Enter the trip distance (one way, or both ways for a round trip).
- Enter your car’s efficiency in kilometres per litre.
- Enter the current fuel price per litre.
Common mistakes
- Using the brochure figure for efficiency. Real-world driving, traffic and heavy loads use more fuel.
- Forgetting the return journey.
Helpful tips
- Divide 100 by your litres-per-100-km figure to get km per litre. For example, 7 L/100 km is about 14.3 km per litre.
- Steady speeds and correct tyre pressure reduce fuel use.
