How to Work Out a Sale Discount Quickly

Sale tags rarely show the final price. These simple methods let you see it before you reach the till.

Try the Discount CalculatorFree, no sign-up. Uses the same formulas explained below.

The direct method

Multiply the price by (100 minus the discount), divided by 100. For 25% off 120, multiply by 0.75: 120 × 0.75 = 90.

The two-step method

Work out the saving, then subtract it. 25% of 120 is 30, and 120 minus 30 is 90.

Discounts do not add up

20% off followed by an extra 10% off is not 30% off. On a price of 100: 20% off gives 80, then 10% off 80 gives 72. That is a 28% total discount.

Watch for tax and shipping

Sales tax is usually added after the discount, and delivery can cancel out a small saving. Compare the final total, not the tag.

Try it yourself

The discount calculator shows the sale price and your savings at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount). If 90 is after 25% off, the original was 90 ÷ 0.75 = 120.
