Quick tip maths
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left. For a 60 bill, 10% is 6. For 15%, add half of that (3) to get 9. For 20%, double it to get 12.
A worked example
A bill of 60 with an 18% tip is 10.80 in tip, making 70.80. Shared between two people, each pays 35.40.
Check before you tip
- Some restaurants add a service charge automatically
- In many countries a small tip or none is normal
- Tip on the pre-tax amount if you prefer, since custom varies
Splitting a bill
An even split is simplest. If people ordered very different amounts, each person can pay for their own items plus an equal share of shared dishes and the tip.
