Miles to Kilometers: Easy Mental Maths

One mile is 1.609344 kilometres. You rarely need that many digits when reading road signs or planning a run.

The quick method

Multiply the miles by 1.6. For extra accuracy, take the miles, add half of them, then add one tenth of the miles. For 50 miles: 50 + 25 + 5 = 80 km. The exact figure is 80.47 km.

Kilometres to miles

Multiply by 0.6, or divide by 1.6. 100 km is about 62 miles.

Common distances

  • 5 km is about 3.1 miles
  • 10 km is about 6.2 miles
  • A half marathon is 13.1 miles, or 21.1 km
  • A marathon is 26.2 miles, or 42.2 km

Speed limits

To turn km/h into mph, divide by 1.6. A 100 km/h limit is about 62 mph. Going the other way, 60 mph is about 97 km/h.
